The history of Shropshire Gas

Shropshire Gas and success – words that in recent years have become synonymous for the Shropshire based company which has gone from strength to strength. It is a real success story which looks set to continue.

Malcolm Carter founded the company in Market Drayton in 1978. Quick to exploit new opportunities, the company was the first in the region to develop a ‘Service Care’ heating cover plan. As a small local business we made 400 service calls in our first year. Today our enterprise completes over 400 service calls each week.

Business evolution

Building upon success, the company relocated to its current premises in 1985. Expansion followed to meet demand of new areas being connected to the mains gas network – growth that was exemplified by a five-fold increase in turnover. In 1993 the company was awarded the largest local authority gas maintenance contract in the area by Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council. Today we are the preferred contractor to both Severnside Housing and North Shropshire District Council – with a combined housing stock of over 8,000 properties.

From this success Shropshire Gas has further expanded to employ a dedicated team of ex-British Gas personnel with specialities in every aspect of gas service. They are able to complement each other, working together as a team to ensure our company’s place as the region’s leading gas service provider. This has provided a platform for rapid expansion of service contracts to: homeowners, landlords, local authorities and insurance companies.

Developing services for the public sector
In 2003 Severnside Housing selected Shropshire Gas as the preferred partner for gas heating service and repairs. The new partnership started trading with a five year contract for the servicing and maintenance of Severnside’s 5,500 housing stock. In 2004 Shropshire Gas was selected by ‘Best Value’ tender as the preferred contractor for North Shropshire District Council. As a result, the company was awarded a three-year contract (with an optional extension) for the servicing and maintenance to a stock of over 2,500 homes.

Strategy for success
Today the company is a diverse business operated by directors Malcolm Carter, James Walton and Thomas Murray. It provides three distinct areas of operation:

Emergency service repairs;
Regular contract maintenance; and
Heating and appliance installations.
